Won't be too hard for most. I like this coin. Its very lustrous in-hand. I am curious where the CCF puts it and why.

Thanks for looking

I'll say MS-62.

Another beautiful add for your LSD collection.

Frosty fields & devices, minimal contact marks, nice peripheral toning.
Very slightly weak strike but the presses were working overtime in 1878 so all is forgiven.

I'd say MS63 at the least.

Looks like a slightly mishandled proof, with good cameo contrast. I'd suggest PR-63CAM. The scattered small ticks and field disruptions should limit the grade. Nice eye appeal!

I would agree with Jaobler. PR62-63 CAM.

I would also agree this one at MS-62, but could also be a MS-63 candidate.

Wonderful 1878 Type II.

It's a business strike with a Reverse Die "D." The obverse die has the date in a more central/right position, so it has to be Obverse 4, which makes it Type II, F-104.

Interestingly, the reverse die shows the radial die cracks, which usually are associated with the later die state. The dead give-away for the reverse die is the die gouge between the "M" and "E" of DIME. The obverse die is very close to its terminal die state, and has been polished heavily. This may be one of the last F-104 die pairing coins before the obverse die was swapped out to make the Type II F-107 variety.

There's a lot of chatter on the obverse, but few really sharp knocks. the reverse has some chatter, too, but is better. IMHO, it's obverse MS-62, reverse MS-64, net MS-63, with an eye appeal bump to MS-63+. It's very close to a CAM, but just misses (see UNITED STATES).

Really nice coin!

MS-63 would not surprise, but I don't believe this is a proof.

The proof die is Type II, Obverse 1, Reverse A, F-101. The date is further left than this coin, and there is rust pitting on the top two folds of the gown on the left knee and die polishing marks on the leaves beneath "ME" of DIME.

Indeed. 90% of my LSD collection comes from Fortin. He's got a quality eye and solid service coupled with the fact he's in an elite group of series experts and if you like owning varieties there's no better place to frequent. I've been acquiring from him for about 10 years now.

I agree 110%.
I bought a few coins from him myself. Always more than satisfied.

Excellent analysis by fortcollins. I was thinking PL and not PR.

I also bought 2 coins in the past from Fortin with great quality.

Great guesses by the CCF. I was not anticipating the proof guesses at all. Coinfrog nailed it, great eye friend.

ftcollins must be a student of the series because he certainly was armed with the right information. And to boot, its the finest known variety of the F-104 and the plate coin in Fortin's reference book:
