Every year, the local news stations here in north central West Virginia run a story about a "mystery donor" who places a thousand dollar bill into one of the organization's red kettles... The only problem is, it's the same bill year after year.

The $1,000 note is certainly flashy and makes for an interesting human interest story, but if whoever donated it wanted to make a bigger impact, I would suggest they sell it first and then donate the money realized by the sale.

Of course if they sold it, they won't be able to use it again next year for it's annual publicity stunt.

Let me help the local Salvation Army officials clear this up so they can quit lying about it.

That note is kept in an envelope in a safe for 364 days a year by the owner and it only sees a Red Kettle for a few minutes each year. It NEVER sees a bank teller or never rides in an armored car as a bank deposit. The local news media outlets are notified about the note being "found" and are called in for a photo-op (publicity!) and the story gets airtime and is targeted to be a shot in the arm for donations.

The person that really owns the bill then retrieves the note (pre-arranged) and exchanges a real check of 1000$ for it. It then heads back to the safe till same time next year.

The "donor" gets to keep his note and still gets a 1000$ write off on his taxes, the Salvation Army gets their annual donation and publicity shot in the arm and the news outlets get fill-time for the 6 and 10pm newscasts (between car commercials).

Look for the audio/video tech at the station to start blurring out the serial numbers next year.

Reading the background story, I am actually impressed. Sneaky, but the appreciable kind I suppose if it gets the job done.

Now I am wondering about those gold coin kettle finds.
