I have a small silver coin from Holland, a 1739 silver stuiver (KM #91a). I have read that the one and two stuivers sometimes circulated in the American Colonies in the pre-Revolutionary War era. Is this correct?

Thanks.

In general there was a shortage of coinage in the colonies. Anything that arrived here would most likely be used as a circulating medium. Whether the 1 and 2 stiver coins circulated here I can't say. If they did it probably wasn't to a large extent because I don't recall any discussion of them circulating. The Lion Dallars did but I can't say about the fractional coins. While the Dutch had an early presence in North America and did found New Amsterdam (New York City), the English had pretty much pushed them out of the area by 1690.
