Good afternoon everyone,

I was CRH today and found this 1999 penny. The last 2 9's of the date get progressively less detailed (idk how else to describe it) the closer they get to the rim, all of the letters in LIBERTY are stretched upwards (some of them are thinned out, others looks like doubling), and all the letters of IGWT are strange as well, plus the top of the last T in TRUST is almost missing. I have no idea what is happening here with this coin, does anybody know what causes this?

Your coin is showing DDD. ( Die Deterioration Doubling) which is extreme die wear starting to affect the devices. There is also an issue on the right side of the Liberty affecting that area. On the left side of this area it is showing die polishing to remove part of the rising ridge rim issue. No hub doubling. Just an altered die and an alter post strike issue (MD) on your coin. Your looking at the wrong areas for a doubled die. You are looking at the outside edges of the devices, when you should be looking at the centers of the devices for a doubled die.
Variety Vista shows no DDO's for that year:

Same on Wexler's site:
http://doubleddie.com/300201.html
Same on coppercoins. On the 1995-D cents there is a DDO:

1999-LMC-Stretching/Thinning-Of-Some-Devices,-Thickening-Of-Others
Note on the devices: The spread is on the centers of the devices, even the mintmark is affected with a slight spread on it as well. That is what to look for. Centers, not the outside/inside edges of devices. That is where Machine Doubling and die wear found on coins. Centers of the devices is where to look.

@coop thank you for the info, however I never thought this was a doubled die, it doesn't have anything that looks like hub doubling to me on it, I simply could not imagine that this could be caused by Die Deterioration. I will know better hereafter though thanks to you!

I appreciate you man, I have learned a lot from you.
