I am looking for opinions on this coin. It bothers me the reverse is toned, and some devices on front like inside letters and edges of stars have dark "color" around them. Most of my morgan set is AU/Low MS so I always have a hard time judging coins in lower grade that have been cleaned. What do you all think?

This looks like a nice coin. I don't see any sign of harsh cleaning or other significant mishandling. There is light wear on both sides, bringing the detail grade to XF-45, maybe AU-50. Given the level of wear there should be some remaining luster but I'm not seeing much in these images. Looks like the "capped die" variety.
I would think this coin is worth sending in for certification.

I'd say AU-50 sharpness, but lifeless look is of concern. to the CCF!

to the CCF. The photos show a coin with dull surfaces, not very eye appealing - but of course that could just be the photographer skill. For grade - agree with XF/AU, but ask - what is the story with the gouge/big hit just above Ms. LIberty eye? I'm wondering if that might detail grade the coin seeing it's in a prominent location.

Agreed that surfaces look a bit lifeless. Not harshly cleaned, but looks to me like it's had an old cleaning and retoned lightly (could just be the pics). Grade, can't see higher than XF, I'm at XF40/45.

I will say XF-Details cleaned, But from the reverse picture it looks as if you have 1879-CC VAM-3 Large Over Small CC, which is a Top 100 VAM. Very Nice pickup.

To me it screams "cleaned" (dipped).

I am at XF40 as no luster shown in photos. The example may of had an old cleaning, but the coin is not showing any hairlines from a cleaning. The coin has typical toning from sitting in an album with a cardboard backing.

Looks like to coin was soaked in Tarn-X.
