The 1 Deca coin represents the failed attempt by American libertarians to build a new country on a submerged coral reef back in 1970. My dad's cousin was one of the investors and gave me this coin at the time. From what I've found on the web it's currently valued at about $100US. Opinions on whether I should get it graded/slabbed? I don't think it's going to pay off. I would keep it in my collection as a memento. Unless, of course, you are chasing money.

Not in the subject of course, but I am very concerned that TPG has begun to evaluate both fantastic coins and banknotes. I see a lot of Arctic banknotes and other territories on ebay.

I decide about getting a coin slabbed by seeing how much they are selling for on the market (eBay?).
If I am going to ship to NGC or PCGS then I have to value a coin at least at $100 to break even. For ANACS a bit less.

@Edm, good to have you check back in. In general, please don't start multiple threads for the same coin. Thx. http://goccf.com/t/384244

Spence. Agreed. In general. Different topic. Same coin. 14 months later. Search didn't find it for me.

The slabbers will slab a well-catalogued fantasy; there's the main difference. As noted in the earlier thread on this coin, this one is catalogued, in the Krause "Unusual World Coins" listing as KMX# 7. Anything listed in KMX can get slabbed. As for the OP's main question in this thread, on whether they "should" get it slabbed, it depends entirely on what the OP plans on doing with it. If selling it is a goal, then sure; the coin is in the price range where slabbing is worthwhile, and the slab may give people confidence to bid. Or if most of the rest of the oP's colleciton is slabbed, then slabbing will help it match in terms of storage etc. If you're just keeping it as a keepsake and family heirloom, then there is no need for slabbing it.

My thought was to get it graded/slabbed in order to have it authenticated and cataloged for its provenance, for whom it goes to after I'm gone. For instance, at my eventual passing, an unfamiliar coin in a collection could easily be discarded as "junk silver" or fake token.

@EDM: Interesting piece - thanks for sharing it! From your last post, it appears you've answered your own question! Not all services will grade your particular fantasy piece, however, so you'll need to contact one or more of them before sending it off.

I am still very skeptical about any money issued by anon-central bank of the country. I can still understand the symbols of the United States during the Civil War or something like that, or the notgeld of Germany. This money was released forcibly and with the permission of the government. I can find many examples of how a person seized a tower somewhere in the sea and turned on a printing press, and now people are collecting it. I'm not accusing anyone, it's just my opinion and you may not agree with it.
