This one I picked up about a year and a half ago from a dear fellow coin dealer who also was thinking it was a contemporary counterfeit. Considering how mushy the devices are, is what lead us to that possibility. So I am just wondering everyone's thoughts Edited by mrwhatisit 01/07/2022 9:13 pm

Agree, surely this is a counterfeit.

I have no idea about contemporary (= forgery?), but it most certainly appears to be a counterfeit.

Interesting piece, particularly crude, and not the typical 1861 date. Certainly presents as contemporary. Condition is a bit unfortunate, but still collectible to the target audience.
Note how lopsided the shield is!

Time to revive this a bit...
Badmetalcoin.com is selling the exact same coin with the same markers for $99.00! One matching marker is the die lines around the word OF.

It looks like a lead casting. Did you ever check the weight?

I'll say it's real. Looks too messed up to be fake, if that makes any sense.

BTW, if you follow through to the BadMetal site, he's taking pre-orders for the volume, expected to be printed in early November.
