Ebay Seller Of A Suspected Fake Asks Me To Withdraw My Negative Feedback - Thoughts?

I've learned a lot over the last 6 weeks since returning to coin collecting and this forum was very helpful in confirming to me that I had bought a very suspect Bar Kokhba coin a few weeks back.

I felt the moment I handled it that it wasn't right. Experts on this forum helped to confirm that impression.

So I gave the guy (who is on a fakes list since pointed out to me by Victor on this forum) a one star review and commented "Doubts about its authenticity" but added that my money had been refunded straight away. That's fair. It wasn't an outright accusation and I credited him for authorising an immediate refund.

He's now asked me to withdraw the review saying he bought it himself in good faith and my review will harm his business.

Since the refund I've had to chase him twice to get a return address and he finally replied saying he didn't want it back and I should throw it away.

That doesn't stack up with his claim now that he got duped by the person that sold it to him because, if he had been, he'd want it back to chase the seller.

So I then dug into this a bit deeper. I kept a copy of the original return ebay return authorisation. It showed his registered ebay address, the one he has refused to give me. It's a British name and a London postal address.

The address doesn't exist. I've checked google earth streetview and google maps and there is no house of that number on that street. It appears to be one of a block of houses which were torn down to widen a road.

Furthermore, the address of the package sent to me with the coin is most clearly written in European rather than British handwriting (the style of the letters and especially the 7s and 1s) - not by a man with an English name.

According to the fake sellers list he is associated with another fake seller noted in Oct 2020 who has since changed his ID to a different innocuous sounding name (b-antiques)

I'm going to refuse to change my review. He's got over 1300 positive ones on the last 12 months and mine is the only negative. I don't want to pick a fight. I'd add that he's got my address and if I've threatened his business (my guess is that he is making a tidy sum off dubious coins) as he claims my review has, I don't want this to get unpleasant.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

It sounds like you have it figured out. I don't believe it is right or proper for an ebay seller to make amends and then expect a change in rating when it comes to selling a fake or overstating/misrepresenting an item. It truly is on the seller to validate the authenticity of what they are selling or deal with the consequential neutral or negative rating regardless of what they do to correct the situation.

You've done the right thing. The negative review needs to stay there. ebay very often do not remove fakes or sellers of fakes, so other buyers need a warning.

I suspect the seller will try to remove the review anyway, by appealing to ebay on the grounds that they didn't know it was fake and they refunded you in full. I think ebay might have some sort of limit on the number of times you can do this, hence their request.

It might be worth reporting the facts you have about their address to ebay. There are a lot of fakes made in places like Bulgaria and people know that, so they try to disguise their location. ebay do not want sellers doing that, so they might do something about it.

He may only have your one negative feedback in the past year, but he also has 4 neutrals and 6 revised feedbacks (which are likely negatives that he had removed by ebay). I suspect yours will be gone too regardless of what you do. I agree you should not change your feedback.

It's just like I tell my students: I don't give grades - you EARN them. He earned the review you gave.

I have had the same thing happen a few times after leaving negative. Request from seller, then ebay removed it a little later. Don't be surprised when your feedback disappears. It stinks.
(I could not find a seller b-antiques.)

This is b-antiques https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/b-antiques

This is vintage_items925 https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/vintage_items925

They seem to have no items listed currently.

According to Victor's website http://www.lateromanbronzecoinforum...,1218.0.html

...this used to be bisdimi_60, who was a pretty notorious seller. Victor called him 'blue' because his coins always have a particular blue background. This seller had another page nicknamed 'red'.

By the way, if someone offers you a Bar Kohkba bronze for £38, either you're robbing them, or they're robbing you.

You can get good deals on ebay, but check the coin looks and costs something in the same ballpark as similar coins on VCoins https://www.vcoins.com/en/Default.aspx or in auctions on Numisbids https://www.numisbids.com/

Agree, this will likely disappear whether you do anything or not. Let it stand.
