I am watching this item on an online auction. There appears to be something wrong with the mint mark. It is possible that this is a s/s horizontal but isn't identified as such....or....the S mint mark has been added post mint. What is your opinion? A fast response is appreciated.

Honestly, it raises concerns for me. The coin is almost too good looking and the "S" raises suspicions to me. I know on early LWC's, the mm's were all over the place. This mm seems to out of place for the 09-S. I could be wrong. BadThad would be the guy.

Thank you both for the fast responses. I am hoping Thad or Chris will chime in soon. Can you see the horizontal separation in the S mark?

A larger pic of the mm would be great. It is a ball serif but likely removed from one LWC to this one. You might want to check out https://www.coppercoins.com Great info on mm styles.

Given the fact that I am working with a posted photo, this is as good as I can do to isolate the mint mark. It doesn't even look right for an s/s variety.

My opinion is that the mintmark has been added to the coin. What you see as another mintmark below is really "weld" of the added mintmark. I'd stay away from this one.

Alan,

Actually, Kurt is the man when it comes to authentication. He's much better than I at photoanalysis. My best advice would be to compare to certified examples on ha.com....that's what I do when I'm questioning a coin.

Sort of looks like the S/S. Chuck from coppercoins is usually around here so if he doesn't jump on this one you should check with him on https://www.coppercoins.com I have both his books and just looked in them for a similar 09 but the one he shows is slightly different. Just looks like an RPM to me. So where is Mr.Daughtrey when you need him?

When it comes to analyzing diagnostics, this is another tool.
