that nickels from 82-83 are at a preium in MS 63-65 i know there was no mint set for those years but does that effect the price of the VF -EF coins as well?

I think it would but it would be minimal. I didn't know those years commanded such a price. It was very interesting to see, never noticed it before. Just imagine if you bought quite a few rolls of these back in the day and saved them all this time or even for another 20-30 years. That's if every nickel in the rolls were at least MS-65.

Actually the coins in anything less than nice uncirculated grades are common. It's the GEM BU coins that have the premium because few were preserved. If you look at the mintages for these dates, there's no shortage of them in circulated grades.

Just a thought, The U S Mint did not make "official mint sets " for 1982&1983, however they did make "souvenir sets", those years and only sold them from the Philly & Denver Mint gift shops.

Actually, if you go to numismedia.com you will see a premium on all of the 82, 83 and 84 P nickels. Now I don't want to argue with anyone, but if a site that that is updated monthly says there is a premium on those coins, somebody is paying the higher price.

Some of those prices on numismedia.com seem a bit contrived to me. Seems kind of silly that they would even bother listing a price for something like a 1983-P Nickel in G4 condition, considering your chances of actually finding one in such a low grade are slim to none!

Does this conversation exclude Proof Sets?

Prior to running around purchasing those for a premium price, I'd wait for a few more issues of those price lists. I sometimes suspect that most are copied from each other and if one makes an error, so they all will.

I think that a lot of these were hoarded as BU rolls and are still tucked away. I remember when they came out, there was a short period when they could be found in change and then poof! No more to be found. I think that this was due to the news of no mint sets being released for those years in some of the COIN news monthly papers. I also recall that those I found were discarded if they lacked a good strike and a good number of steps. I probably only have about 15 nickels from P & D from 1982 and 1983 that are fairly nice and have not seen many others since in any condition. I did read someplace, somewhere, recently, that a person wants to buy circulated 1982 and 1983 nickels. I'm just glad that I have those holes filled. I did sell a souvenir set from Denver and from Philadelphia within the past year or two on ebay and they got about 60 or 70 bucks each. The one even had two Lincoln cents in one of the flat pack pockets or something like that for some reason and it was actually slit to insert them and taped with scotch tape. They had a foil or a plastic medallion inside I think for where they came from.

WD, You are absolutely correct, in these sets were a bronze mint metal, from which mint the set was from...
