Long ago I inherited several proof sets from the 1950's and early 60's. The cellophane was falling apart and so I moved the coins into individual coin holder 2x2's. Generally, are they more valuable kept as a set instead of individuals? Is there a "favored" set holder?

Best kept in cello if possible, but only if completely intact.
If cello broken or torn, would not be of any protective use.

In this case, I break the coins out and put them in 2x2's, but for extra protection,
I cut a piece of clear sheet of clean acrylic plastic from food packaging or similar, and put that as an insert inside the 2x2, and staple the whole lot together, as normal.

The 2x2's then go into non PVC archival quality coin album pages.

If you wish to get somewhere near the original cello packaging presentation, cut the album page into a joined 6 pocket piece.

Be especially careful when working with Proof coins.
I would put them in a capsule.

This is what I did with my 50's sets. The plastic the mint used back then is not good for long term storage.

Interesting storage solutions. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference--decide what works best (best matches your priorities) and pursue it. Personally, I'd only consider 'advanced' storage solutions for highly desirable, low-run (fewer produced) sets. Nearly all my US sets have been broken down and placed in US year set Dansco albums, with some in 2x2s.
Rest in Peace

There is also the 6 coin holder that I've seen used.

I've never come across a failed cello pack with my '56 thru '64 sets and I've got mine stored in individual zip loc bags.

I like that solution, it is quick, easy, and maintains OGP all at the same time.
I may have to adopt this method myself for mine

If the cellophane is falling apart then yes you must transport the coins into a good PVC free plastic holder.

They are usually more valuable when being sold individually. More people collect a particular series than they do full year sets, so they just want the one coin they need to fill a hole. However, as the number of intact sets goes down (from being broken to fill album holes and what-not), the relative market for those buying full sets goes up (supply versus demand).

I like that, mtuma3. I have a 1959 proof set given to me as a gift by my Mom about 25 years ago ('59 is my birth year). While all the proof sets I've ever purchased are in the OGP, this one is in a red Capitol holder that I've never been fond of. Your's is a more attractive option.

Funny thing about the gift, she actually gave me 2 sets; the other was a 1958 proof set in the OGP which she'd bought first. She realized after purchasing the first she had the year wrong, and was a bit embarrassed to return it and explain to the dealer so just went back and bought the 2nd set later . To this day she still occasionally mentions her making that "terrible" goof of getting my year of birth wrong . I didn't mind - I got two proof sets instead of just one!

Depending on your birthday, it may well serve to commemorate your conception.
