I have a beautiful mahogany cabinet I made 50 years ago and would like to adapt it for some historical items. An antique book and some Medallic art co medals to complement them. (from the 60s)
This a display and storage for items related to signers of declaration of independance.
I only need space for 8-10 medals. I was considering some plywood covered in felt. I'm not sure if I should use wool or synthetic felt.
The other possibility is lexan with holes and glass covers so people can see both sides.
The book needs a special container and will be dealt with separately.
I would like some opinions about this.
The value of the box may exceed the objects. :)
The total value is under $500. So, it's more about history than anything else.
edit; I just noticed this is in the wrong forum. sorry

. Make sure whatever materials you use are coin safe. Some materials "out gas" and cause a lot of problems.

You may want to consider silver cloth - available at fabric stores

What's the nature of the environment you'll be displaying in--high or low humidity, temperature range, exposure to direct sunlight, etc.? I love high relief Medallic Art medallions.

John1's point is really important. Off gassing can seriously damage metals and paper. The glue used in plywood would be problematic. Shoot. Some (most) species of wood are not recommended for archival use. Mahogany seems to be the wood of choice for projects like you are talking about. As far as the cloth, I have never had to deal with that so I can not offer any guidance. PlumCrazy's suggestion of silver cloth sounds intriguing. I'll have to look into that in case I ever find myself in your position.

Edit: Found this interesting article on different cloths.

You stated your cabinet was about 50 years old. Are you sure about that or could it possibly have been made to appear old. I say this due to the statements already made about gasses emitted from some glues. Which if that cabinet was made recently, some of the glues could still be giving off gasses. In most instances where any wood is used to store items for a long time, there is always a chance that any decaying of the wood could effect items stored inside. However I suppose your storage length of time is nothing of very long times.

Just a note: it is not just the glue that could off gas, it is all materials like felt for example, or certain stains/finishes etc.It all factors in.
