1956 D Above Shadow D? - Coin Community Forum

CRHunting Valued Member United States 172 Posts	Posted 01/13/2022 12:20 pm Hey Everyone, I ran across this 1956 D Penny and I could use some extra eyes to help determine whether or not it's the D over shadow D. I could swear I see the shadow D but I want to make sure my eyes aren't playing tricks on me since it's a fairly worn coin. Thanks for the help! Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 01/13/2022 1:21 pm It is were a mintmark punch it would be raised. It is level with the field, but is just a stain. If it came from the die it would have to be an incuse mark on the die, to make a raised mintmark on the die. It's not. After seeing your responses I was able to get a better angle with my microscope and I confirmed that it's not fully raised like in the example. It looks like I was fooled by die polish lines, a stain, and some shadows. I really appreciate the responses. Report this Post to the Staff
