I searched and have read a bunch about designations for the requirements to full bands, full torch dimes. As I'm starting my Roosevelt collection I am having a great time trying to cherry pick off the internet. I do have some questions however before I go to a coin show next week and do some in person buying.

First off, I have had some success! I'm not sure if demand is down on the series as I'm finding good prices for coins I find to be full band. It is a bit tricky to determine all the factors however. One, photos suck! That takes out 90% of the options! Two, pricing jumps dramatically from MS-63 to MS-66 and especially if you add the FB/FT designations. Nevertheless, I have found coins that look like they have come from older collections before the FB/FT designations were introduced in the early 2000's. Sorry, this is long winded but it brings me to my questions.

Do nicks across the bands that break the line between them negate the designation? Same question with the torch. Also does a poorly struck base base or damage to the base of the torch have an effect? In addition, what about a bad nick that dose not break the vertical or horizontal lines? Here are some photos to try and explain.

In this photo there appears to be a nick that breaks the lower bands. There is also a nick that doesn't break the vertical bands. There is also damage to the base. Personally I would pass on this purchase because it has a trifecta and I'm sure the MS number would be effected. Would these marks if taken individually negate a full band designation?

Here is another one that is actually advertised as a full band! Shocker! My question is on the circled part so ignore the fact it is obviously NOT a FB! Would that horizontal mark across the vertical bands alone negate the designation?

Thank you all so much! I am having so much fun with this series but as I get the the tougher years a nick here and there starts to cost big $$$!!!!

Thought I would share this new arrival before putting into a flip. I wasn't expecting anything much as I got it for $2 as a result of a couple lots I picked from one seller's sale of a dozen or so coins from one collection. The photos on this one were too blurry to make a judgment call but for the price and quality of the other coins I was after I just added it. Comfortable putting a GEM BU FB designation on the flip.

My future concern would be if that nick on the upper band was between the bands wouldn't it have negated a full band designation?

Here is the ebay listing. You can see why photos make a huge deal between paying $8 for four coins when you have already paid for shipping via combined purchases and ultimately getting a coin that could be worth in the range of $15-$30.

Now here is one that I got for $12 that was advertised as Gem BU. Photos were ok but in hand I am reluctant to put Gem or FB on the flip. The bottom band is so mushy.

Please let me know what you think of this one. I'm leaning toward Choice BU and not a true FB.

This last one I will share I had very high hopes for and is the reason I started this post. I thought for sure I had three great 1948 coins. The photos looked great but they were overexposed. Thought for sure this was a full band but now I'm not sure at all. The other two coins had damage that didn't show in the photos either.

This one has the damage on the lower band that I think might keep it from the designation. In this grade this could be the difference in +\- $30

Almost all of your pics are too soft to evaluate.
Rest in Peace

Aye Aye Captain ! Full torch and Full Bands are the same thing .FT has nothing to do with the flames on the torch, in case that's what you were asking . The two sets of horizontal bands must be separated with no breaks . Your photos are kind of blurry making it hard to see the bands . Better sharper pics will tell .

Without wanting to pile on @capt, please only post one coin per thread for grading. Thx.

Thanx guys! Gonna be awhile till I can get better photos. No computer.
I think I got the answer tho. Basically no breaks at all on vertical or horizontal lines of the torch or bands but if a nick is present within the bands and does not break the line then that would be ok?
