Hello all. I just inherited a coin collection, and came across an 1858 Flying Eagle cent in great condition. My research shows values vary wildly. So I want to get this coin graded, but not sure if it's a good candidate. I've attached a pic, any thoughts on if this is a good candidate or not? Thank you!

Planchet defect, a type of error, there on the reverse. Makes it interesting to some, but may not do much to increase value. This is a higher grade and many collectors in the higher grade spectrum would rather not have that.
I'm not an expert on these when it comes to differentiating soft strike mint state or lightly worn. The reverse isn't the sharpest strike. But if there is much wear on the obverse, it appears minimal. This might be one of those AU55-58 or MS62ish situations. Hopefully others with more experience chime in soon.
Congrats on inheriting the cool coin. What else?

Interesting planchet crack. High AU? I think it could be a candidate for grading.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts that it's a good grade able candidate.
@collects82, there is SOOOOOOO much. I have 4 1857 flying eagles in various worse conditions than the above, right here with me. And probably about 5000 more coins to still search through. I will be coming to you all for lots of help!
Thank you!

This is a nice coin, at least AU for detail. The planchet crack appears to be an as-struck feature which may add appeal for some collectors. In AU this coin should sell for at least $200 and you will probably get a higher price if it is graded. Please post other coins from your inherited collection!

Agree high AU sharpness with as-made planchet flaw.

Thanks for sharing! I am looking forward to seeing your other coins!
As for the grading, I think it would be worth it just to preserve the coin.
I am not sure if the planchet error would make the coin a details grade. Like how lamination errors are body bagged.

A Flying Eagle cent is a very interesting coin, with a lot of interesting history behind it. I'm hoping that once you get it graded, you'll allow that to be the start of your collection, rather than you just selling it. There's a lot of joy to be had in our wonderful hobby! Welcome! Steve

lazer310 , Please properly crop all photos before posting. Post one coin per thread in the proper sections of the forum. Post one full coin pic of the obverse and one full coin pic of the reverse as well as one or two close ups where and when needed. If we need more pics we will ask for them. John1

Please don't start a plastic collection. By that I mean don't go getting every coin slabbed. Just put them in an Album and enjoy the hobby.

This short series was plagued with bad planchets, weak strikes and worn dies. Your coin does have a bad planchet, but is surprisingly nice in every other area. I don't see wear and think this might go MS.

Agree with Red. I also think 200 is too low. One in this condition would go considerably higher. Planchet might hold it back but I doubt it.
