I have this 2001-D improper annealing coin I came across, and I was wondering if you think it is valuable enough to bother sending in for grading or just sell as is?

@zill, can you please add the weight of this coin to this thread? Thx.

Hmm, that is odd. I was expecting you to post something much closer to the mint spec of 5.67 g. Your coin might just be missing a clad layer (rather than just environmental toning, which is what I first thought). The edge view might be helpful too. I'd set this one aside in a 2x2.

Looks very likely to be a missing clad layer to me as there is still mint luster on the coppery side, which you would not see if it were environmental toning. Weight and edge also seem to check out. Very interesting!

That is a great point @big--most of time we see these with large swaths of poorly struck up details, but this one is actually pretty clear. I'm not sure how else to reconcile the weight difference to mint specs though.

If the die is fresh at 80 ton strike (starting force for clad 25 cents) and missing clad layout at 0.01 or 0.008 mm the struck details will be OK for the cooper side and for the clad side of the coin show a weaker struck. Which it is the case here. Look at the struck around the rim, it is weaker. This at mint it say lower design profile effect.

looks good to be a missing clad layer. I'm not seeing any hint of silver at all on the obverse either.

Nice find in my opinion.
