Hey Everyone!
I got lucky on Friday and I ended up with a very early look at the 2022 D Penny.

While I was reviewing a few under the scope today I noticed an odd crack on a few of the pennies all located in the same location. Pictured below is the Penny with the strongest version.

Any thoughts of what this could be?

Thanks!

If you would diffuse the lighting you would get a lot better set of images. The setup you are using now, adds glare to your images.

Thanks for the helpful information about images!

Are these better? I definitely need to work on my image taking setup.

Very common area for cracks/chips on shields. You will seen them used as markers on shield DDO / DDR listings. Cool you have already ran across a 2022 coin though. It generally takes me about six months before I see the new year coins.

Yeah I was really excited to see them so early in the year. I live in Denver though so I have a little bit of an unfair advantage :-).

If these types of cracks/chips are commonly used as DDO / DDR markers does that mean it's caused by a specific die, and if so, does that mean it's considered a mint error? I'm curious about the type of error it is and what mechanism is behind the creation of something like this.

Thanks!

I think this is what is described as a "die event", not an error. This is a weak spot in the general design of the shield, similar to the cracks you will see at the corners of the memorial design. No added value.

I just picked a random year of DDO / DDR from Wexler's listings. Scroll through them and you will notice several listings that have them as markers.

A great improvement. Still seems there is an unwanted red light source? Try putting your hands around the coin area to see if you have window light, or room light that is still sneaking into the image. That can be blocked easily with even bond paper. (Printer paper) Just need to determine the direction.

The unblocked light creates glare.
