I got a 1921 s Morgan dollar. I'm trying to see if it is a VAM and if there is toning. The grade is xf. I AM going to post better pics but I thought we could start with toning and move from there.

The numerous black spots kinda ruin the appearance of the coin (at least in that picture) in my opinion.

I agree there but it was a relatively inexpensive coin, and I may opt to have it conserved at a later date. The reverse is in better shape but I could not upload it.

There appears to be some golden toning but full pictures are really gonna be needed to help determine a VAM.

I can add that all Morgan and Peace dollars are assigned a VAM variety automatically, with the exception of new discoveries.

Yall I'm trying to get the pics up but whoever picked that insane free optimizer, it's not user friendly!

I understand about the optimizer —— I had trouble for years trying to figure it out, too!

As far as a VAM goes on your coin I can't determine which it is.

As far as a grade goes I'm somewhere between XF and AU.

Not rare enough to justify a "professional" conservation in my opinion. If it were mine I'd dip it in the magical blue pool for a few seconds and rinse it off. It is what it is.

Any suggestions on how to get a better idea on the VAM? I've been to VAM World and I'm still going down the list. And how do I get that black stuff off?

You can try an acetone soak, but don't set your hopes too high.

I tried to do something with the pics you just recently uploaded but cannot make out anything, just a bit too fuzzy still. When you go to the 1921 S VAM's page, check the four things I have arrows beside first, they are some of the easier ways to possibly narrow it down. The die crack guide, the thornheads, the clashed dies and the bean bottom S. After those, it's just picking it apart. Hopefully, with coin in hand, you can do better at seeing these attributes.

Bean Bag S is out. There seems to be Polish around the left wreath. I'll try to get pics up later. Oh and the black stuff did not come off and I read up on the blue stuff...I have not tried it and I won't as I hate harsh chemicals. Also the acetone...well what I saw said no longer than 5 seconds. I'd be one to get distracted.

OK so I haven't made any progress on this VAM. With the numerous VAMS this one seems to have, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I did decide to play with the camera and see what would happen when I reduce the file size when transferring to the phone. I think it's worse. But does anyone use anything other than that horrible image optimizer?

I know it's kind of archaic but I use "paint".
