How do you know it's damaged? I'm no expert just curious on it. I've never seen anything like it!

1. Because you can see plain as day that it's gouged with metal pushed up.

2. More importantly, it cannot happen during the minting process.

Best thing to do is learn how coins are minted and then you would realize that what you
have could not happen during the striking of the coin. That leaves the alternative as damage.

Imagine a heavy or sharp object comes crashing down onto a coin such as this, however it may, one would be impressed at the number of weird deformations that are possible.

I agree that understanding the minting process is essential to identifying damage from actual mint errors. There are some great video out there.

Note the affected area is incuse. That is damage 99% of the time on coins.
