Hello,

I came across this coin today and it peaked my interest.

I have identified it as a Pius IX papal annual medal. It is silver. I cannot find much consistent information on these. Were these given out by Popes to important visitors or were they gift shop type items? Any ideas on the mintage numbers on these? I have to imagine bronze are the most common, followed by silver, then gold...but were tens of thousands of these given out or are they rare?

Also, since I am new to coins... Is this coin cleaned? I was not able to get a picture of the reverse, but I may go look at it again.

Anyway... Any thoughts would he appreciated.

Thank you!

Your medal has a very nice patina and I don't see any obvious evidence of cleaning. Many Papal Medals are listed with rarity indexes on this dealers website.

Thanks @t360 I think I am going to get it. After a recent purchase of a cosimo III coin, I am into large silver coins. This one is reasonably priced compared to some comparables I have seen.

The only information I found online implies these were somewhat scarcely distributed. Any suggestions on additional resources?

Thanks!

Ok. So I took a look this afternoon. I did not have my scale with me, but will weigh it tomorrow. It felt a little light in hand and the edge rim was a little cruder than I would imagine. It is 40mm d.

Any thought?
