Would this qualify as a true error coin? Notice the H in "the bay state". What would this type of error be referred to as?

That is not an error, it is called a Die Chip, a common occurrence when
part of the die breaks off.

Almost forgot

An inconsequential, as far as value, die chip. A fun find though.

NO! There is little or no extra value for a small a Die Chip.
It would cost you about $50.00 to grade a coin worth 25 cents

Well that depends. The cost of ownership is low, so if you like it (and you clearly do), then of course save it. If you ever tire of it, then you can spend it at that time. I agree definitely not worth getting it slabbed though.

Always keep in mind that unless a coin is worth around 150.00, you lose money slabbing it with someone like NGC or PCGS b/c of membership fees etc. Then with an error you have to id the error yourself and ask them to verify and put it on the label (for another fee of course).

ANACs does not have all the extra fees, but some slab+label+coin collectors don't think this company is on a par with the other two mentioned.

But some people just enjoy collecting slab+label+coin for what they are. To these collectors slabbing costs are just a part of their hobby and the money makes no difference.
