In my experience vinegar and peroxide does work but it will give the coin a dull look. You also have to keep an eye on it to not over do it and rinse it off once your done. The whole process could take 2-3 hours.

So what is the proportions on the vinegar and peroxide solution? Equal parts of each?

So I experimented with the 3 parts vinegar to 1 part peroxide soak on the slick Shield nickel and a dateline Buffalo! Took two soaks for the shield, 1st just about 3 hrs, didn't do much, so dunked it again next day! After the first hr or 2 on the 2nd round I could see the date, 1867, let it sit for about 3 more hrs and then I could see this:

The reverse was completely slick, couldn't make out a thing! I thought it was pretty neat watching this whole process! Did I do great damage to the coin, probably, but to me it's funner knowing what you have as opposed to wondering

And by the way, the dateless Buffalo was a 1926 S

I guess I should've clarified on which Buffalo, it was not the one from above, which I did put in the same solution, but it turned out to be a '28, was two other Buffalo I had that were dateless, of which one was the 26 S! But here's one from above after just an hr and a half maybe 2 hrs in solution

Hey, it really impressed me on the shield and the rusted Buffalo! However, like the others were saying, the vinegar will etch the surface! And u must keep a constant #128065; on em cuz some brighten up quick others not so much!! So rinse immediately after removal from solution, then you can place coin back In solution, if needed!
Also, to all the members, would reducing the amt of vinegar, while increasing peroxide slow things down or make worse?

I believe more peroxide speeds things up since it acts as a catalyst

I'm surprised you were able to bring out the detail like that in the condition the Shield nickel was in. As you said, you did damage the coin, but you've ended up with something at least identifiable, and there wasn't really anything to lose.
