I've found a Shield nickel (I'm pretty sure) that's really worn, one side almost smooth, but you can make out the shield on the other side. Any thoughts on how to find out a year for this guy?

Not on this one. The reverse was also altered. So it is just a cull coin now.

It's not even a coin anymore, just a slug IMO.

Dang! I knew it was pretty rough on thee reverse, but since you can still make out enough to see its a shield, figured still gave it some sort of value!!

In my experience even nic-a-date won't work on Buffalo nickels like that. But I disagree with the others. Even a dateless Shield nickel would have some value. Not much whatsoever, but more than 5c.

Thanks, so if I put a lil vinegar on a soft toothbrush, and just tried to brush around that rust, would be a bad idea? What's the proper way to just clean a coin that's dirty? Someone once said never rinse a coin with water?

I don't see a MM, unless it's a 1916 DDO, It would be wasted effort on that coin in my opinion. It's pretty roached.............

Me and my brother found that one still in the dirt, we were just curious as to the date, plus I have a book with all the different yrs and mints, that I'd love to one day complete!

Suggest posting only one coin per discussion topic. Thanks.

There are no safe methods and the coins pictured are already too far gone to be of value. I did see a video of someone soaking the entire coin on a slick Shield nickel with Nic-a-date to expose a rare date though. Vinegar and peroxide will clean things up a bit but the etching will leave the coin with a washed appearance. Nothing to lose here so why not experiment with a soaking. If nothing else, it will show you what a coin treated in such a manner would look like.
