So in amongst the slick Shield nickel, '27 D qtr, cpl V nickels, and an array of foreign coins from all over the world (I'm assuming he brought back from his Navy service during Korean War), I find this separate bag of nothing but pennies. Majority are 1964 D's, but all are from '60s and almost all are Denver mints. I haven't had a chance to really look close at em yet, but can anyone give any insight, as to why he would have kept these separate, surrounded by some fairly nice coins? Or maybe anything in particular I should be looking for, especially on a '64 D? I don't see where that yr had a well known errors?

I don't know why he saved them separately, but 64 Ds have about 15 to 20 RPMs listed

Take one by one and look at max 25x. If something show go deeper. I find those bags of coins returned from Vietnam's and Coreen wars are really interesting's. I find some rare local occupation coins or notes also.

Many collectors have no apparent rhyme or reason as to why they organize their stashes the way they do. Anthropologists 200 years into the future would be absolutely puzzled if they came across my crazy hoard.

Maybe because during the mid-60s it was uncertain if/when mint marks would return, with 1964 possibly the last year of the D mint mark.

Didn't realize how small some of these coins are from some countries. Then on the other hand, you could use a South African penny as a coaster on the coffee table!
