So this was another gift from the father in law, which was in a lil protector. I'm not sure if he got it out of circulation, but I couldn't help but notice how pronounced the 6 in the date looked, compared to the 9! I realize it's silver, a softer metal, but then I looked at the MM. Is that normal for it being in circulation, or some other factor?

Just circulation damage.
The mm may have a broken post but hard to tell from the picture.
Still Worth it's weight in silver.

Maybe camera doesn't do it justice, but when I stand back, with naked eye, I see S, but up close looks like a filled in D?

The filled 'D' is filled because the pin that formed the center of the 'D' has broken off. Not a premium for the coin. But is a silver coin worth melt, so it is not a spender. Cash it to get the silver melt value.

I am guessing the 6 stands out to you in the first coin because it has more oxidation surrounding it than the 9 does. The second one looks like a keeper.
