I see part of the 21. Tough date.

I'd grade this G-6.
I believe the obverse drapery and reverse rim would need to be a bit stronger for VG.
Pre-1925 SLQs don't typically show all 4 digits of the date till you get into Fine or higher. Usually the last digit is the only one visible in this grade and date.
Nice key date!

It's G4. The 1921 was notorious for the last 1 in the date only remaining in this level of preservation. It's a better date for sure for the SLQ's.

I'd grade it VG-10, at least from a TPG. Cleaned though, most likely. I see all or most of the date, its just faint.

Thanks guys.. We've got everything from AG-3 to VG-10 ShadowCreator, what do you see that tells you it's been cleaned?

Too bright on the obverse. I'd personally grade it VG-8, might get that grade from ANACS though.

I think AG3 is a little harsh. I'll go G-6

Could the brightness be because of my lighting? I was trying to show as much detail as possible.. plus I sharpened the heck out of the RAW file before cropping and converting to jpg.

It could be. However, it looks like the bottom of the front has been nicely scrubbed.

Quote: it looks like the bottom of the front has been nicely scrubbed. Agree.. perhaps someone used a pencil eraser (or similar) in an effort to try to see the date more clearly? As for the grade, at first I was thinking G-4, however according to Photograde this is an AG-3. Excerpt: AG-3 Obverse: The date will be identifiable although barely visible. G-4 Obverse: Wear will extend into the date but the date will be easily identified.

Completed auctions of examples worn identical to this one are graded anywhere G-VG and have gone for 100-250 recently. One I saw could have been this coin except both sides were significantly brighter. That's the one that went for $250. Obviously cleaned but the buyer either didn't know or care.
How do you tell if an eraser has been used? Will acetone fix it? I don't want any foreign matter like that on my coins.
Thanks for everyone's input on this one. I have another (my 2nd! w00t) I'll be posting soon that will hopefully get a better opinion.

rbf, on dates like this, I have seen TPG's ignore the date as long as the rest of the detail is there. This series is infamously poorly struck and the dates tend to wear off really fast and can be partially missing even in VF
