@tha, first welcome to CCF. Second, can you please add the date, mint, and denomination of this coin to the thread title? That helps us when we are searching for something specific. Thx. With regard to your coin, that step-like doubling looks like Machine Doubling to me.

To answer your question, wishful thinking, or better yet hopeful thinking. What you have here is a copper/nickel clad coin with Machine Doubling caused by a bounce after the strike using a wearing out die.

The larger the coin, the stronger the Machine Doubling is. Tour looking in the wrong area of the devices. Look for it to be enlarged in the centers of the devices for a doubled die. On the outside/inside edges of the devices is where you will find Machine Doubling. Machine Doubling is caused by the machine. A doubled die is cause by the die. You can have Machine Doubling on a doubled die.
