What is the little concave pit near the bottom right hand side of Kennedy's neck? Could it have been caused by a speck of debris on the die when it was struck. I don't think it is post mint damage. This was taken from a BU roll. I'm not going to save it. It was one of the culls from the roll.

A BU roll does not mean that the roll specifically came from the mint with each coin being the way it was released from the mint.

As just one example, my Grandfather used to make a BU roll every year of halves as they came out (he had half dollar changers in his businesses). Someone who got the rolls when I took them to the bank (after cherry picking of course) may have thought they had a mint roll, yet the coins were all out of circulation.

Well it is possible that a small glob of grease was on the die or planchet when struck, or it could just be a contact mark during movement from the bin of other freshly struck coins to the bagging of or transportation to the facility that rolled it up..

Earle42's statement, "A BU roll does not mean that the roll specifically came from the mint with each coin being the way it was released from the mint." is certainly true. But I still don't think this is post mint damage. The coin came from a large group of rolls purchased from a bank in the early 1980s. They were all 1981-Ds. Two of the rolls sat untouched in a safe for about 40 years. The rolls were all machine-rolled and were obviously not rolled by the mint. While post mint damage is a possibility, the pit does not look like any contact marks I have ever seen before. It doesn't really matter. I will probably just spend this one.
