I recently purchased a Peace dollar set and upon closer review of the coins I noticed the 1934 P has an odd area around the eagles head. It appears the die was ground/repolished - maybe to remove a die clash or gouge? - creating a raised area in the field. Anyone ever see anything this pronounced before? Thanks!

I did a closeup of your pic in that area. I'm not sure what you are saying is raised, all I see is what looks like a dark stain.

It's not a stain. In this case my original picture does not fully convey what my eyes see. If you tilt the coin in the light, it is apparent that what appears to be a stain is actually a "plateau" of higher relief metal than the surrounding fields further away from the eagle. I'm not sure how I can better show this with a photo - maybe if I take another enlarged photo of the area at an angle it will make more sense. Look how it blots out the bottoms of the letters RIBUS.

Might be clear glue too, if it is raised. Yes an angle pic would be great!

The color makes it appear like something added to the coin. Die polishing wouldn't make the coin gray/black. I would say it looks very much like a stain.

I'll take an angled picture. The area is neither gray nor black. The apparent differences in color are due to light being reflected from different angles of the raised metal slopes. There is no glue on the coin. The whole area actually has the same color surface metal if the coin is rotated. The lighting is from a single source/direction and poor (my fault) and that is creating problems with perception.

It almost looks like a stray rubber band got against it for some time from the picture.
