I have a 1878 8 tail feather Morgan up on the bay, I expected it to go for maybe a $80-$100. It is currently over $220. The auction ends tonight. Could not determine the VAM# as stated in the listing and the coin has been cleaned with light hairlines. I am not complaining on the unexpected interest and current price it is at but am curious if it is a scarce VAM? Item number is, 275152792365If additional pictures are needed let me know. Thanks for the help as always! RK

I can't tell for sure, but do I see the "comma" feather on the eagle? If so, that may be VAM-9 / first die pair. That, to me, would be one of the holy grail Morgans. I hope the VAM masters see this and provide more insight.

I appreciate the help, I went through the VAM's til I got a headache. Too many varieties. I did look at the VAM-9 but ruled it out. I also thought it was a "stick" feather. still scratching my head.

It looks like an A1c reverse and possibly VAM 14-6. edit to add - possibly 14-6a if I'm seeing the radial die crack on the fourth right star.

Quote: Looking at mine right now Thanks, @grape. Any chance you could post a good closeup photo of the comma on yours? I have never been able to get a good idea of what I'm looking for there. Every reference sure helps! Thanks.

Thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction! I think Dave is spot on. I rechecked and I can clearly see the radial crack on the 4th right star. looks like the exact position as the photo on VAM World....thanks Dave! The chip is on the ear, somewhat harder to see but I had missed it. I guess that's why the price has gone up on the coin.

I'm not sure how I missied your original topic on the VAM-9 and 60 pair but cool set Grape! And thank you for the opportunity to attribute a Morgan dollar. I do enjoy it...
