Hello, I'm looking for some information on a clamshell planchet error... How do I know that's what I'm looking at, how can I tell if the error is authentic & not 'man made' so to speak, & who do I inform if I have an error never before seen? *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Start by uploading some good sharp pictures of the coin, obverse, reverse and in this instance, the close up area where the clamshell in question.

Other than some strange discoloration, the front & back aren't disfigured in anyway, that I can tell, I'm having trouble loading those images.

You have posted two photos of the obverse and none of the reverse. It is not a Clamshell but as John1 stated, it could be acid damage as the copper core would be eaten away first.

@curi, first welcome to CCF. Second, we seem this sort of damage quite often here and ascribe it to the clad coin being immersed in an acid that preferential attacks the copper. If you weigh your quarter, it should be underweight.

Yes, you can tell by holding it, it is light. However the pictures dont do it justice. Thank you for your help!

an acid dipped quarter. the copper is much softer than the copper/nickel cladding and will dissolve quicker than the core.

Not a clamshell error, you can see the corrosion around the edge.

That acid is hungry and like copper.
