@mikey, not my area of expertise, but in comparing your coin with the images on numista, there are several differences. For example, the position of the leaves with respect to UN PESO. The drastically wrong weight is definitely a problem as well. Is a strong magnet attracted to this piece?

I'm hoping that someone more knowledgeable than I can will be able to comment if this is a modern fake or a contemporary counterfeit.

Definitely fake ... as Spence as noted, besides the weight issue there are numerous discrepancies when compared with Numista https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces24556.html

Missing text, lack of detail on pillar, wrong font and letter spacing all stand out on the obverse.

Volcano shape and detail, wreath and font are all notable indicators on the reverse.

I agree the coin is most likely a Numismatic Forgery. It is NOT a contemporary circulating counterfeit.

I collect counterfeit coins and I would value it at roughly $25. It would make a good study coin with which to teach people how to categorize fakes properly.

Please advise if you put it on ebay.

Unfortunately, it is most definitely not a genuine coin.

The fonts, the beading, and the edge design are completely wrong: much too uniform and 'modern' looking, untypical for this era of Chilean coinage.

The actual design is also not that of the 1817 Peso, for example, the volcano ant specially the smoke stack arising from the volcano.

This coin is so popular, being the first peso of independent chile, that fakes are actually quite abundant, either (i believe) of Chinese manufacture, or made locally in Chile.

Edited to add: if the weight is that far off the typical weight of the originals, that alone is a dead give-away.

I agree with Bob Gurney and would John Lorenzo be fool enough not to agree with Bob Gurney - all the time <BG>. Bob all I can add is that this is a great study coin. It sure has SOME flavor of a modern Chinese fake - that brushing away of the silver to simulate wear but I do see cast bubbles on the surface - however we also seem to have mercuric silvering worn away as in the right obverse field but its fabric is mid-20thC? A bit complex with SUGGESTIONS of both modern China and a mid-20thC production piece hence its a great study coin. First I have seen on these much sought after types. After an XRF analysis it would not surprise me of a German Silver (Cu/Zn/Ni) type composition which the Chinese counterfeiters love to use to simulate silver looking regals but its probably mercuric silvering over a copper host. You would never mercuric silver a german silver host.

The coin is certainly not typical of Numismatic Forgeries. The way the silver was applied is certainly worth confirming.
