Any downside to removing this 1970-S small date from its original mint wrap? Recently purchased single coin.

I was planning to put it in a 2 x 2. However, I'm also working on a Lincoln Memorial album and could find room for it there.

Store it any way that suits your collection. That mint wrap is not adding any significant protection value, so no loss in removing it. Nice looking example from what I can see from the obverse photo.

Get it out of that packaging. If you don't it will get worse and become permanently damaged.

Just soak it in 91% alcohol or acetone for a few days, rinse, gently pat dry. Then get it in proper packaging. The government packaging is no good.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I removed that 1970-S small date LMC from the mint packaging and soaked it for a couple of hours in acetone. (It was kind of hazy.) It cleaned up pretty well I think. Of course, what is revealed is some light scratches and dings, perhaps some die polishing marks, and the diagnostic weak strike of "LIBERTY". Average quality from an uncirculated mint set?

It's about 70%ile in strike but only 30%ile in being mark free.

But it's a nice specimen and an awful lot of these have already been ruined by the packaging.

Yes, average quality from an uncirculated mint set--sadly.

Good call - now store the coin in whatever folder/holder/flip you prefer.

The scratches on the obverse are superficial "hairline" scratches which look worse in the photo than in hand, and changing angle they virtually disappear. The reverse side has 2 dings which look like they came from contact with another coin or two, typical of business strike coins.
