Perhaps a "broken post" die chip. Guessing this is not unusual.

Yes always fun to find a coin struck from a die with a broken post. As mentioned by the frog though, these are common enough that there isn't a numismatic premium.

once a coin gets that worn it's tougher to be sure what happened, what you might do it save this one and look for other 53-Ds in better condition to compare
