Picked this up in an unusually ill-attended auction last night, having tossed in a low-ball bid. Was the lower price due to anxiety over soaring oil prices, waves of desperate refugees and the erosion of Western Civilization? Or is it all business as usual, and this coin us simply impaired in a way I don't see? How would you grade it?

well I'm not a proof expert but this coin does have the appearance of one. one concern are the striations across the face and neck that the photos could be hiding. assuming that they are a non-issue then the second concern is if it is a proof the surfaces are not showing that and appear to be dull. again this could be lighting or ?.
I'm going with PF63. the real coin in hand will tell the tale.

This photo is from the auction house. Although I don't have the coin in hand yet, my experience over the years is that their photos are the best in the industry and the coin will look pretty much exactly as you see here -- subdued luster overall, some heavy-ish tarnish on the obv, and a mid-cameo reverse.

For what they are worth, here are the profoundly misleading TrueView pics of the same coin:

I am not sure what other people see to give such a low grade. I don't see much of any contact marks. A few strike throughs.
I'll say PF-67.

And that's why many sellers love TrueView photos when selling coins, and many buyers hate TrueView photos when buying them.

Quote: And that's why I love TrueView photos when selling coins, and hate TrueView photos when buying them. I ignore them, and never, ever use them when I sell coins. To do so is just plain unethical. Fortunately the auction houses always use their own photos. To avoid lawsuits, I suppose.
