I'll say XF-45 details cleaned. Pictures are a bit dark.

If it were mine I would send it off for repair. As is, it is a holed coin.
If it gets properly repaired it would still be net graded due to repairing but would most likely look a lot better.
It is what it is.

My apologies the pics are not better. Westernsky, where is the best place to do this? Would NGC or PCGS fill a hole? What grade do you think the details are in? The stars look great still have lines, but some wear on face.. I'm looking at purchasing this coin.

The grading services don't do this kind of repair stuff. It is labor intensive, detailed, difficult to do and frankly could be a conflict of interest to their business model. I've had a few coins repaired over the years by Alan Stockton at http://www.crsstockton.com (I believe he is located in Kentucky.) I was very happy with the work he did for me back then. Never hurts to get his opinion or an estimate! The way I looked at it holding a repaired coin looked a lot better than holding a coin and staring at a gaping hole! As far as a grade goes right now it would be "XF Details - Holed"; after a quality repair it should become "XF Details - Repaired Hole". (My opinions, reality can easily be something different!)

Really a shame. I'd say AU detail. This is the variety with 180-degree rotated dies and it's an expensive and scarce coin. Might be worth getting a quality repair to make it more presentable.

Yes it's the medal orientation variety and closed fraction from what I've read. Cool

with less than 18,000 minted its a little better date. I have it at AU details (damaged, holed). I would not do anything with it, leave as is

What would you value it/pay for it? It seems prices jump a lot per grade

I'm curious as well to know what collectors of this series might pay for a holed example.

I don't imagine much more than melt.
It's got a gaping hole and the price to fill it would be quite a bit.

So I'd assume 800 ask is too much

I'm no expert on damaged/holed coins and there are folks out there that collect them but I can only give an opinion from my point of view. as a collector would I purchase the coin? my answer is no. does the coin have value another collector? I have no idea. if the coin graded XF45 details(holed) how much is it worth? if could be anywhere from the value of the gold to someone whatever someone is willing to pay for it. at XF45 straight the coin would go for about $4400 so its not an inexpensive coin. if I was selling it, I would start at $800 which is about 20% of its value if straight and if it doesn't sell then you may need to bring it down.

Thanks panzaldi. I'm looking to purchase this coin, maybe resell if possible interest.. I would consider plugging the hole if that would be better in the long run.
