This one hammered at $555.00 Sunday on GC. NGC has it in an older holder at EF-45 straight. I don't see that EF-45 oompff on this one especially on the week reverse but saw an opportunity for a higher grade example for about $100.00 more than a good looking VF and went for it. Your opinions are sought and welcomed. Thanks images courtesy of GreatCollections.

To me it's EF-40 and lacks curb appeal.

I agree coinfrog, first thing I saw was everything that's wrong then went backwards and keyed in on the rights and decided glass was half full instead of empty. It is imo a tad odd generic EF-40 a closing time last call EF LOL. Tough date in VF or above and at wholesale price feel comfortable with it.

I think XF-45 but with an old wipe or cleaning that erased the luster. This would net XF-40 in my opinion.

XF40 tops. Looks like it might have had an old dip to lighten that toning. Toning is a bit splotchy for my taste.

possible cleaning long ago? I don't see it but yes quite possible. approx 70 EF straight graded 1898 O examples between PCGS NGC ANACS and likely some resubmits of that 70 so perhaps it got a pass? My set is ANACS and am sending it to them for slab but only if it crosses at 40 or 45. ANACS? hey why not I haven't any issues with them on smaller valued coins they imo have tightened up - now if this was an 1913 S quarter different game.

i agree with everyone so far that the coin appears to be XF40. at $555 its way overpriced even for an XF45

These are very tough to find in this grade, particularly with a decently struck reverse and full rim. These went into general circulation and stayed there. Minimal eye appeal, but limited availability. Has the looks of a cleaning and re-tone. Definitely maxed out at XF-45.

Yes I agree and with a rarity rating of R5 its certainly staying with me for awhile VF's are around 900 bucks I don't have dealers access for wholesale coins and consider 600 a nice bargain. Coins holder has been handled roughly there's more hair strands showing in hand and leafs are crisp but plastic is all rubbed and foggy. Will be interesting what ANACS opinion will be.

Here is its cousin from the west coast NGC XF-40 straight. I can live with the nicks on obverse the reverse strike got my attention. Maybe this baby was a Philippines repatriation example - cleaned maybe? but I think it blows the 98-O out of the water imo.
