Hey folks,

I don't specialize in Franklin half dollars so fill me in..

Do these 2 cuts preclude this from FBL?

I believe it does but wanted other opinions

Thanks

Take a close up pic of the upper Bell Lines . Some TPG attribute FBL by the upper lines only . If going by lower lines ,they are not FBL because of those hits .

PCGS just uses the lower bell lines to determine FBL status. A few light marks across the lines are okay, but those seem heavy enough to preclude FBL. It's a close call.

I don't think so, especially with 2 hits.

TBOP- The only 2 grading companies that matter don't require just the top ones.

NGC designates FBL on both sets of lines, not just the top.

PCGS goes by the bottom set.

Well in my personal grading company I only go by the top lines . Not the bottom lines and certainly not both of them .

IMO for a coin to be FBL ALL of the lower horizontal bell lines must be complete, fully struck and uninterrupted. There is a plethora of "sorta" FBL coins out there sneaking their way into FBL holders, which diminishes the value of truly full-struck FBL coins. (This is the NGC standard; PCGS only looks at the bottom bell lines as noted above.)

There is a "grading grey area" with the bottom set of lines as a weak strike can make a coin appear to have interrupted bell lines. Some folks are okay with such coins getting FBL designations, but personally I'm not -- I want a FBL Franklin to be well-struck. The same applies to weakly-struck Jefferson nickels and Mercury dimes sneaking their way into FS and FB holders.
