Hello,

I have been offered this coin, for about 20% over melt. Could not find any ebay past listing sales on this coin. Being square, I thought it was a medal at first. But after researching, I think it is one of the only square coins from Colombia. It's a Colombia 2000 Pesos from 1975 (Tricentennial - City of Medellin) proof coin.

It weighs 8.6 grams total (.900 gold purity), and has a 4,000 mintage according to the NGC and Numista on the coin. I am new to numismatics — but would a 4,000 mintage, and being square make it a valuable coin?

Right below "1975", it appears to be dark. Hope it was a camera shadow, but it might be a sign of past cleaning :(

Thanks in advance for any help or info on this coin which will help me decision on buying it.

No, not necessarily. The proof coin shown falls into the category of "collector coin" vs. "circulation coin." A mintage of 4,000 for a gold circulation coin would very likely be in demand and be valuable. The same can't always be said about collector coins.

Non-circulating collector coins generally have a smaller collector base vs. circulation pieces. So, the supply of many low mintage collector coins exceeds the demand and thus prevents them from reaching market values well in excess of their intrinsic value.

I don't know how large or robust the market in Columbia is for non-circulating gold collector coins. The NGC World Price Guide suggests the coin is worth its bullion value, but I can't independently verify this.

If you like the coin, haven't come across many, and it is being offered to you for 20% or less over its intrinsic bullion value, it is worth considering IMO. I just wouldn't expect to quickly turn around and sell it for a profit.

Best of luck!

Selling price 240 euros in June 2014 when gold was trading at about $1200/ounce, so this coin did not command a significant premium over melt value back then.

No—shape doesn't determine value. I agree that it is likely primarily worth the spot gold price, but the novelty of it could make it a fun addition to your collection.

In my opinion no value over spot gold, if it is genuine that is.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will try to negotiate the price as close to spot as possible. Also to weigh it, measure the dimensions, and look at it with a loupe before purchasing to confirm 100% it's real. Cheers.

I have a square gold 300 Guilders, but
I have never seen an example of a Colombian square gold coin offered in Australia.

I regard my piece as just an exotic piece of proof gold, that has a low collector demand, and thus can be bought in the range of 20% to 50% over melt, despite the low mintage.

The reason for the 300 guilders is included in my collection is that I have a rather extensive collection of square coins from around the World, comprising nearly 100 different designs, most of which are base metal, almost all are common.
Just a fun collection.
