Hello,

I am wondering if there is a quality book on South African coinage?

Mintages, images, and values of modern issues and maybe back to the late 1800s. Kind of like a Red Book but for South Africa.

I've searched around online but cannot find glimpses of what the few books that show up look like on the inside.

Thank you I'm advance!

Are you an ANA member? Members have access to the ANA Lending Library which has several copies of Catalogue of the Coins of South Africa by/from Alec Kaplan.

The most recent version they have, however, dates from 1987-88. If your primary interest lies in coins from the last 35 years, you will likely need to look elsewhere as the Kaplan book does not appear to be in active publication. Of course, any values listed in this volume would be very out-of-date.

You could also see: Online Coins Catalog for info on all eras of SA coins.

I believe the "Hern's Handbook" is their standard reference.

Quick note regarding South Africa - prices really boomed ca. 2010 or so, but have cooled off considerably since then. Learn what things are actually selling for NOW in numismatic auctions, ebay, BidOrBuy, etc.

I'm not an ANA member but thank you for the name of the titles.

And thank you Reales for the authors name of Herns- found the book! Interesting to know about the prior price boom and will keep that in mind with current sold prices.
