Hi - I have a 1964 nickel with a bizarre mint mark. Pics I'm including dont really do it justice. Looks to me almost as if it was intentionally marred-at the mint? It's as if someone made strokes over the original mint mark. Looks like a "W" with one elongated center stroke and two shorter side strokes, maybe atop a P or D?

I couldn't find anything like it, and would truly appreciate input.

Thanks!

Likely the mint mark took a hit and got damaged, but the pictures are too blurry to say.

Thanks for responding.

It's really strange bc its not like smudged. Instead its like clear, short, up down strokes added atop original mint mark.

Sorry pics arent better.

I'll try to get cleaner photos.

. You can buy a clip on magnifier to clip to your phone.

Whatever it is and from your description, it is damage.
There is no way for a mm to get extra strokes during the minting process.
Clear photos would be nice to see what happened.

While hoping for better images, I'm thinking a sharp, lateral hit taken in circulation is the cause. I've seem similar mint mark hits on nickels and quarters (mostly).

It is a damaged D mintmark. That was the only mintmark used that year. San Francisco mint was closed that year, probably ramping up plans for 1965 to reopen. There was no 'S' mintmarks between 1956-1967. In 1968, the ' mintmarks S' were seen on the start up again on the proof coins, also on business strike cents until 1974. Since then, just on proof coins. The SBA dollar coins had 'S' mintmarks on business strike S dollars 1979-S-1981-S. Ike dollars had Business strike 'S' on 1971-S - 1974-S Business strikes. But it appears cents, and dollars were the only ones that had Business strikes after 1968-S coins. The rest were proofs with the 'S' mintmarks.

Thanks everyone for the input.

I rubber banded a 45x lighted magnifier to my phone in order to take the photos. Completely forgot I do have some of those clip on magnifiers here somewhere. I'll mess around with and see what I come up with. I'll come up with some way to get clearer shots.

While I'm not an avid collector, but I've been looking at coins ever since I was young-er (I'm 56). My grandad was a collector and he'd occupy us kids with coin rolls searching. I've done it from time to time ever since, and like many people, Ive got a small tote of stuff tucked back for rainy days. Never seen anything like this. I'm at a loss as to how such damage landed squarely atop mint mark in this manner. It's as if some streaks of molten metal redistributed squarely atop there.

Anyhow, I truly appreciate you all taking time to share your knowlede in this, which far surpasses mine for sure.

Be a day or two before I can get back to this. Thanks again!

If you have specific questions in mind. I have answers to questions on a link that you've never thought of yet? CoopHome (note it turns blue) it will take you there and you can see what is covered there. Now 13 pages long. See something you like there, post a comment and it will bring that link back up so others can benefit also. A lot of information there along with thousands of images and explanations so you will see what I see on these coins. Won't cost you anything, but time to learn more.
