From my limited knowledge, My understanding is that it was common for a mint employee to re-work a die resulting in all sorts of missing digits, over dates, etc. I'm not sure to what extent oddities and ,I'm assuming ,examples like your coin are attributed to re worked dies. Just sharing a possibility I learned about recently.

. It looks like the coin is in a 2x2 holder? If so,please remove it and take better in focus photos. John1

@ethan first welcome to CCF. Second, I'm not aware of a 1944/3 cent overdate existing, but perhaps someone else can point to such a thing. The closest I can find in a quick look is an 18 year old troll thread on the forums. Better pics could help, but I think you most likely have circulation wear plus Pareidolia rather than a remnant 3.

No such thing as a 1944/3. Besides that, your phantom 3 is too close to the 4 even if there was.

Well, I figured as much, but thought I would try and get an honest opinion. Replies above call it a phantom 3, so do they have as big of an imagination as me? I'll just send it in for attribution, the three is raised, not flat, so we will see. Thanks anyway. Happy cloud gazing!!!

to the CCF No need to waste your money. You have decade apon decade of experience telling you what it is. So I'll throw my decades in too and tell you that it is just corrosion and dirt. The answers you get on this site are not to burst your bubble. They are just honest and trying to save you money. Before you send it in, stay here a while. There is a lot of knowledge here, just us the search tab.

Before anything I will clean for 4 to 8 hours max in pure acetone. Seem long time an 1943 coin was over this coin. Then I will take decision to send if I have others opinion on. Take in consideration that if it is an 4/3 will touch just a very small collectors and not the big ones.
