I was seeing AU myself coinfrog. Did you notice the mintmark on this one? The A (hesse - darmstadt) on the 1888 is sort of the German version of our 1916 D Mercury dime or 1898 micro O half. Coins going to NGC tommorrow its a nice example and in Germany will bring a nice sum.

whoops scratch the above...this is the KM# 510 Frederich 1888 A 2 mark equivalent to our 1946 D Walker. Its his father Ludwig on this years A issue that commands high premium. There goes my new 16ft Lowe V-bottom wide jonboat, will have to settle for tank of gas and pancakes at I-Hop.

Seems like the excitement got to you a little bit there. The A on here is for the Berlin mint, which was the only mint that this coin, and the one you mistook it for, were made at

The Ludwig IV coin you thought this was would still have an A but would read Von Hessen for Hesse-Darmstadt, and this coin reads V. Preussen for Prussia.

Lovely pieces though, big fan of German imperial

AU easily and nice appeal as well.

Must be quite scarce as Frederick was Kaiser for just 10 months between Jan and Nov 1888 between Wilhelm I and his son Wilhelm II.

He was married to Victoria Princess Royal of Great Britain (Sep 1840 - Aug 1901), the eldest daughter and child of Queen Victoria. Unlike her other children, mother and daughter had a great relationship (Victoria called her "Pussy") as she had the good sense to be married off before Albert died.

They sent each other letters for years with the titles "Dearest Mama" and "Dearest Child" even when the Empress Victoria was 59/60 years old!
