I have this Edward penny, highly likely Edward I. It's been narrowed down to supposedly class 10, somewhere among the following: 10ab3, 10ab4, 10ab6, 10cf1, 10cf2, or 10cf3.

Going by the UKDFD site, none of those seem to quite match what I have.

Obverse is + EDWAR (or EDWA R) ANGL DNS HyB'
Reverse is VILL SCIE DMV NDI, for Bury St. Edmunds

I'd appreciate any further opinions on this. Was a $25 purchase as an Edward II penny, so not a bad deal, just not what I was hoping it was. Certainly not worth getting an NGC membership.

Yes I see what you mean.

The king's name is EDWA, which means it's 10ab6 or 10cf1-6.

I would say by the crown it is not 10ab6 or 10cf4-5, and probably not 10cf1-2.

The large S means it isn't 10cf6.

That leaves 10cf3.

"The 10cf3 crown has a tall central fleur, the left leaf of which is usually damaged".
- I would say this describes your coin.

"The ornaments are arrowheads, the left-hand one of which lacks its left barb and thus appears to incline to the right."
- but this does not.

"Later coins, designated 10cf3b (2nd gallery image), have new lettering with an E of rounder form and an H with out-turned tail."
- this could well fit your coin.

"The crown of 10cf3 is used again for coins of type 10cf6 and 11d."
- as much as the point above about arrowhead ornaments makes me doubt 10cf3, if you look at the coin given for 10cf6 (with "the crown of 10cf3") the crown looks much like yours. See this version of the site: https://www.rodblunt.com/edwardian-...ies-group10s

Obviously, there is quite a bit of doubt either way, but 10cf6 is dated 1307-9, which is Edward II.

It's a mess, isn't it?

I already have an Edward I, NGC XF40, S.1396. Was hoping for this to be an Edward II as was listed on ebay, but at $25, I can't complain too much. It's a nice piece from a less common mint.

Edward II is hard to get in great condition. Yours is good even in so far as you can see all the elements that should identify it, even if they are ambiguous! I'm amazed someone on ebay identified it, unless it was a dealer.

Whoever originally had it identified it as Class 12, which it clearly isn't.

Knew it wasn't a Class 12, but was still hoping it to be an Edward II.

*shrug*
