Hello,

(This may belong in the bullion section)

I was going through some of my bullion coins tonight and this 1976 sovereign weights out correctly, the diameter is right, design is perfect to my other example and online examples, Reese's edges match all others, but ... It is pinging 2/3 frequencies on piNGCoin. I assure you it's the right color ... Just not in the photos ... It's been polished and dinged ...It pings right but isn't registering 3/3. I bought it from a jeweler that took it from ... Jewelry. It feel a bit flat and worn die a bullion coin.

I am not concerned about authenticity (I shouldn't be right?) But I am curious what may cause the discrepancy in the ping app... Flattened coin?

Thanks!

If it was "taken from jewellery", then it's highly likely the shape has been altered by either the act of inserting it into jewellery, or the act of removing it. The "sound" a coin makes when pinged is highly dependent on it's shape. And the rim on this coin does look a little flattened to me, especially on the obverse, when compared with the NGC database image.

Conclusion: genuine, but only worth bullion value.

@sap....that's exactly what I figured. It fits all of my other examples,.spot on. As I get more into the numismatic side of these things I am just confirming my intuition and conclusions. More of a study than a concern about authenticity.
Before buying a single coin for numismatic interest I was into bullion grade sovereigns, of which this was one. I think I paid €5-10 over spot....long enough ago...

Thanks for your reply!
