The images are awful... but I happened to go open an old shoe box.. literally looking for loose change LOL and I found this coin. I don't know why I have it nor do I remember getting it. I was drawn to this box last night and needed to open it ... wild!

It's .925 silver. The size of a dime. I read that in m60 it's worth $60! Does anyone know anything about this coin or how this toning could affect value? I will come back later when I'm back home to try to upload a few details if anyone wants to see. :) I've read that collectors enjoy nice toning but I also read that toning ruins the value. Being that this is an old coin, I am a little confused about it. (Total newbie)

Thanks!

Will check replies in a couple hours :)

I can't speak for American collectors, but the toning might put off a British collector for one reason - many UK collectors buy Maundy oddments so that they can make up sets. All coins in a Maundy set should ideally have similar toning, and it would be very difficult to find 1d, 2d and 3d coins to match this one!

I've attached photos of my 1871 Maundy set for comparison:

Rob is right. If an restoration is done and what I see could be in the 63 could attract some British collectors.

Oh wow, that's a beautiful set. Thanks for the info. I don't even know where this came from but it's really pretty even with the toning. Very good to know that they are collected in the set. I will see if I can get this cleaned?

What kind of restoration can be done and is it very costly to do? A worthwhile effort? I am in the US and have never done this before, of course. All your input is greatly appreciated! I feel like this is a great score even to save, though I don't know enough as of yet.

The coin has toned black
perhaps because it has been stored in a very old white bleached paper envelope for many years.

I found it near a plastic 2x2 with paper inside, I don't know what kind of plastic it is. But it was not in it, it was just loose in the box. But the coloration has some black, pretty blue and a little brown. Does that mean it's not salvageable? It's so pretty underneath, you can see it :(

Some species of wood resin can induce severe toning on silver coins.

I wouldn't clean it. Salvageable from what? The toning makes it different. If it's worth $60 it's not going to be worth getting it restored anyway.

I was responding to the other comment about collecting for sets. Someone mentioned restoration. So I thought maybe it would be worth doing something to it. I like the toning too but some of it is black and brown as well. I don't know if the value goes down due to the condition, those darker patches. I am very new to this :) Cheers and thanks!
