18% gray scale sheets are available on the bay.

Thanks John1. I read that earlier from you in this topic.
Me being a tight wad, I printed a picture of the sheets then I went to the local hardware and took home a selection of matt grey colour sample cards that were around the same shade. Seems to be a big improvement. I'll play with the lighting some more and try masking the LED's as you suggest. This current set up casts a small ring shadow on the background which I find distracting, but I think the coin itself is pretty much as in hand.

I have been having trouble with lighting also. With a camera + macro lens, not a microscope. But the problem is the same.

Here is what I found, nothing special about the lens other than it's designed to be used at a distance farther away from the coin.

This is most useful if you want to use natural light. Makes it easier to avoid having the shadow of the camera on the coin. If you use a camera and macro lens, get no less than a 100mm one.

Try natural light. You can try using vertical white cardboard to reflect light on the side of the coin opposite to the source of natural light. Or you will get uneven lighting on the coin.

If it is like a camera you can also put something white on the field of view, to get good white balance from the sensor. Or you will have to fix it in the image later.

The microscopes may be a cheaper alternative to cameras. I should have seen this part of the forum earlier.

Hey Dearborn - Would you mind providing a screen shot of the current setting you are using with your DM201 Pro? I have the same make/model with a 10"stand and I'm having some difficulty readjusting the settings. I conducted a cal with white paper and the results were not good. So I conducted a reset, but it still seems to not capture the true colors. Thanks in advance!!

Sorry I haven't gotten back to this topic sooner, I must have missed it somehow. Yes I can post up a screen shot of my setting for you.

@gorham: I'm not much of an error coin collector, but let go back and see what I have and post something up. (But I do not have any strong Doubled Dies - that I'm aware of).

Appreciate the reveiw. I was about to pose the very questions as to a Tomlov or Dino-lite, but for myself and what I'm looking for the Tomlov is the ticket. Thanks Dearborn!

My nephew has a mid level Dino and loves it. I have a low end Dino and I like it, neither comes with its own screen though.

John,
Do you think it would be a good idea to add the date you received your scope to your title?
