(Mods, you can tweak this if needed, I am not sure if this topic has been done before ).

We collectors have at times have wondered "Why did I ever buy that?" It could be a coin we thought was genuine, but later turned out to be a fake or an alteration, a coin we thought was great when we bought it but not so much now from us learning more about it, ect. Medals, tokens, and foreign coins can also count.

One of my earliest regret coin purchases was at least 15 years ago when I was very naive on coin collecting and I bought this 1844-O quarter that is so clearly whizzed it's unbelievable. I guess I thought the date was really cool, and I didn't know much about whizzing, but still bought it anyways. It cost me 25.00 for this .

I bought two Dutch silver Rijksdaalders (Crowns) at two different coin shows that turned out to be cleaned and/or mildly whizzed when I examined them under a loupe at home (forgot to bring a pocket loupe when I was at the coin show). Later, I bought two straight graded coins instead and sold the Detail coins on ebay. Almost recouped my money.
I also have a half dozen Dutch cents - that are in circulated condition and not impaired - but decided I wanted to really assemble a AU/MS set of cents after all. Just not a circulated set. The circulated "duplicates" will be sold in Europe when I hopefully get to visit family this summer.

I never regretted a purchased, if after purchasing it, it wasn't what I expected I returned or sold it. Are there coins/notes I would upgrade if I could, sure but in some cases the price is higher than I feel comfortable spending and in others, after having it for a little while, I understand why I purchased it forgot about upgrading. I enjoy it for what it is.
