I purchased an east African shilling at a fine price. As a bonus, the seller added a " thank you"coin.

I know it is a ten fen or one jiao.

I cannot figure out the date and the rim( edge is Reeded) design is different from other examples.

The coin weighs right and it rings right.

I believe it is dated 1921. I cannot find an example though. Here are photos.

Looks to have that toning around the devices that many counterfeit coins of Chinese origins seem to have.

Is it even real?

I think it is legit, honestly.

Wrong photo I-Got-An-Unexpected--Surprise-In-The-Mail.-Chinese-Experts-Help-A-Brother-Out.

Every measurable is right. Just the particulars on the coin are not identified.

Thanks; I have no idea as to date/denomination or authenticity.

Hopefully someone with more experience/knowledge will pop in and enlighten us.

The legend translates to 10th year (1921)
10 cents
Each (or every) 10 pieces (coins) equal to one dollar

Don't ever recall seeing such a date before, colour also looks off. And also a free coin...

You know deep in your heart it's not real.

@Albert

Thanks.

This coin should not exist then.

Thing is the weight, diameter and ring are correct. Also it isn't a convincing fake because of the obverse edge.

I have no clue.

I am seriously confused by this.

@NUMISTER

The seller was not a coin dealer. It is entirely possible they send it not knowing what it was.

tissue test with a .750 coin twenty centavos 1944D similar silver fineness.

No discernible difference that I see in color.

But I am no expert.

What if it's a pattern coin...

If this coin was genuine, I would expect to see it among my books.
But I don't deal with such small coins very much.
Hopefully someone may discover and tell us more about it.
My hobby concerns questionable coins and the only one I have that is even close is the YSK 20 cent piece.
Dollar size coins are by far more common. Out of hundreds of coins, I think the dime size are few and far between.
I may have 3 or 4 dime size compared to hundreds of dollars & Twenty Cent Pieces.
I think you are fortunate to get it.

I agree. This coin doesn't check the usual boxes for counterfeits.

Thanks for your attempt.

I will add. My example, whatever it is, is far more detailed than any of the Jiao coins I have seen with the big guy on them.

Note the details on the chest area, for example.

I skimmed over the patterns and didn't see it.
Also not seen among Mint Sports
I presume a magnet was tried?
A magnet grabs the few I have.
It seems so well defined I'll re-visit the books to see if anything like it may be among commemoratives, memorials, etc.
