Does anyone have any experience with "copysafe" PVC coin storage sleeves? I have just seen these advertised but could not find ant independent information about "copysafe" PVC. Of course the vendor says they won't harm coins like PVC would do normally. I would be interested to know what others think about this product.

There are so many other proven options out there, even if "copysafe" were given away free I wouldn't take the risk.
They might be perfectly fine... or not... kind of like making a wager and flipping a coin (pun intended) only if you loose your coins are worth scrap.

Why bother being a guinea pig? I only go with proven archival holders for my own coins. As long as you are buying from a known entity or direct, you will be sure you get what you pay for and no chance of "fake" counterfeit products. Stick to the top sellers like Brooklyn Coin & Stamp, Wizard Supply, Lighthouse, Cowens, Safe-T-Flip, Capitol Plastics, Dansco, Intercept, etc.

I'm aware of copy safe sheet protectors for documents; they are generally advertised as PVC-free and I've seen some ads state they are made of non-reactive polypropylene that is archival quality for printed documents, photocopies, photographs, etc. In my experience, "copysafe" was a descriptor vs. a brand name. (I've used such products for documents with good results.)
I have not read that these document pockets are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) before - in fact, they often state "non-PVC" or "PVC-free" on their package. I wasn't aware the products were available for coin storage. It's possible the coin products use a PVC that does not include the plastic softeners that cause the problem.
@SallyG: Do the copy safe holders you saw offer some distinct advantage over the many known-to-be-safe coin storage products already on the market?

PVC in its "raw" or "pure" state is chemically stable, but is brittle and translucent. To make it soft, flexible and transparent - qualities that you kind of need for a coin album - they have to add plasticizers (usually phthalic acid diesters). It's the plasticizers, rather than the PVC itself, that causes trouble with coins. It's also the plasticizers that cause the distinctive "PVC smell". So, it's entirely possible to have a "PVC-free" coin album page that's nevertheless stuffed full of plasticizers (so is just as dangerous to coins as an actual PVC album page). But it's not possible to have a PVC album page that doesn't have the plasticizers. For a coin collector, there is no such thing as "safe PVC". For the curious, the OP is in Australia, and (I'm guessing) is quoting from the sales page of Australian supplier VST. See this link. If it's just a typo and they really meant to say "PVC-free", then VST really ought to proofread their marketing blurb. Or at least get some coin collectors to check it. They're never going to make sales while they proudly boast that their albums are made of PVC.

Thank you for the replies. Yes, the sleeves are advertised as "copysafe PVC". I havent been able to find any information that confirms these sleeves are suitable for storing coins. I wont bother with them. I've got some coins in the little plastic bags that th e banks supply but I guess those aren't suitable for longer term storage, either? I will keep looking for suitable alternatives. Thanks again for your valuable assistance and inputs. Have a great day.

Quote: I've got some coins in the little plastic bags that the banks supply but I guess those aren't suitable for longer term storage, either? The bags are reasonably safe for medium-term storage; the main problem with them is that (most of them, anyway) have little airholes in them. This lets the bags get sealed up but you're still able to squeeze surplus air out of them, which is great when handling the bags at the bank, but not so great if the goal is to preserve the quality of the coins. This in effect means that, while you can use these bags, you need to keep the bags in a larger more airtight container like a plastic box or a larger "zip-lock" bag.

A good rule of thumb - but NOT a guarantee. If the storage items are safe for food, it's likely safe to store coins in as well. Tupperware bins, food baggies, etc, should all be just fine, I've used them myself for decades now, along with desiccant packs which I recharge regularly living in a fairly humid climate now. No issues from the containers. Though most of my coins are in 2x2 holders or albums as well. Also keep out of warm or heated areas, and keep them dark away from light to preserve things as best you can, humidity and light are the real dangers, after bad chemicals, like PVC in materials.

Sorry to be to an old thread but I was just recently trying to figure out if my files from the Royal Australian Mint were safe to use sent them an email and they informed me they checked with the supplier and they had been informed that the coin folders they use are Copysafe PVC and then guaranteed that they couldn't in any way harm my coins. At the very least now if they do damage my coins I have proof they are liable haha

I know this thread is older but I thought I'd hop on as well. I tried to find information on this since I ended up buying those pages without realising they claimed that they are 'copy-safe' PVC. So I've got some, and I have mixed feelings. It feels like PVC holding it. And it looks like PVC and smells like it too. But the fact that the Royal Australian Mint also claims to use these is putting my mind at ease for the minute. In future I think I'm going to get some new ones, these are the wrong size for what I wanted anyway. But I'll risk it in the short term I guess. Just kicking myself for not checking these close enough!
